Buying a property through an agent works well, until something needs to be changed quickly and every request has to pass through another office first. Domain names work in a similar way. Every .my domain is held in a registry, and the companies that sell domains are not all equally close to it.

In short, an accredited registrar works with the .my registry directly, with no other company in between. It took us four years to get there, from official reseller in 2018 to accredited registrar in 2022. Here is what each step meant, and why it matters to a business that depends on its domain.

What Is a MYNIC Accredited Registrar?

A MYNIC accredited registrar is a company authorised by MYNIC, the registry for Malaysia's .my domains, to register, renew and manage .my domains directly with the registry. Accreditation is given only after the company meets MYNIC's business, operational and technical requirements, and those requirements continue to apply for as long as it holds the accreditation.

Key Points

  • MYNIC is the registry for .my domains, and every registrar and reseller works under its rules.
  • Valse became an official .my reseller in 2018, an accredited reseller in 2020 and an accredited registrar in 2022.
  • An accredited registrar registers, renews and manages .my domains directly with MYNIC.
  • The domain always belongs to the holder named in the registration, which should be your company.

Who Looks After .my Domains

Three parties are involved in every .my domain:

  • The registry. MYNIC administers the .my domain space, sets the rules on who may register which domain, and keeps the authoritative record of every registration.
  • The registrar. An accredited registrar is authorised by the registry to register, renew and manage domains on behalf of the domain holder, and is the registrar of record for those domains.
  • The reseller. A reseller sells domain registrations through a registrar's programme and looks after the customer, while the registrar behind it processes the registration.

The domain itself always belongs to the holder named in the registration, which should be your company. The registrar and the reseller manage it on your behalf.

2018: Official Reseller

Most of our clients' websites and email depend on a .my or .com.my domain, so in 2018 we became an official reseller of .my domains. It meant we could register and renew our clients' domains ourselves, alongside the hosting, email and websites we were already looking after, instead of sending them elsewhere for the one part that everything else relies on.

2020: Accredited Reseller

In 2020 we became an accredited reseller, the next step in MYNIC's programme. By then domains, DNS and hosting had become part of the platform we were planning, which would begin in 2021 as NagaCloud, and it was clear that looking after domains would be a long-term part of our work.

2022: Accredited Registrar

In 2022 MYNIC appointed Valse Technologies as an accredited registrar. As a registrar, we register, renew and manage .my and .com.my domains directly with the registry, with no other company between our clients and MYNIC.

For our team, it also meant meeting MYNIC's requirements on how a registrar operates: its business, its processes and its technical connection to the registry.

What It Means for a Business

  • Fewer parties to chase. A renewal, a change to the domain's settings or a transfer is handled by the registrar directly, without waiting on another provider.
  • One relationship for the whole address. When the same team looks after the domain, the DNS, the hosting and the email, a problem with any of them is answered by people who can see all four.
  • Clear ownership. Working with a registrar does not change who owns the domain. Keep it registered in your company's name, with contact details your company controls.

How We Look After Domains at Valse

As a MYNIC accredited registrar, we register and renew .my and .com.my domains directly for our clients, and look after the hosting, email and websites that depend on them on NagaCloud, our own platform. Our advice to every client stays the same: hold the domain in your own company's name, and let renewals be handled as part of your support so the date never depends on one person's memory.
